Every day we hear of high profile data breaches in companies as large and perceivably safe as Sony and Google. These breaches are real and increasing, and the European Commission is proposing fines of up to 2% of annual global turnover for companies that fail to comply with notification requirements in the event of such a breach.

Continuing turmoil in the financial markets as a result of the sovereign debt crisis have left financial institutions more exposed than ever to claims from disgruntled investors as sovereign debt exposures threaten to crystallise into huge losses. In addition, FI’s are still grappling with an increasing range of complex legislation and regulations which make them particularly susceptible to investigations, litigation and claims.

Having spoken at many C5 insurance and reinsurance conferences over the years - on subjects as diverse as allocation and aggregation of losses, "follow the settlements", environmental liability, forms of dispute resolution, and insurer insolvency - I have always been impressed with the calibre not only of the speakers (even if I say so myself) but also the delegates. The chosen topics are always timely and C5's organisation very efficient.

It was an honour to be a speaker in the recent Energy Insurance Middle East. The structured approach and the genuine effort to create intense debate on topics, sometimes, even making the panelist slightly feel out of comfort level (at the same time not putting spot on)is very much a welcome sign for the common industry good. l look forward to being part of them in the near future too.

As a speaker at a number of conferences, I find the C5 conference admin much better than most, with good venues and sensible session timings. The content of the D&O and FI conferences is on point, and highly relevant. C5 manages to attract good, knowledgeable speakers. Attracting speakers who are not scared of panel debates and taking questions makes the discussions lively and interesting.

C5's conferences on Insurance and Reinsurance allow everyone in the business to take a step back and review the state of the market. They often highlight the key issues which brokers and insurers alike need to address. I have presented at several and also been the Chair on a couple of occasions and have always found them to be well run and hugely informative.

C5 conferences are amongst the very best in the insurance sector. Always selecting competent industry leaders as speakers and held in good venues with comfortable facilities. Slow dull and lacklustre is NOT the C5 model. Usually good chairmen see to that. As a past speaker I know C5 are reliable and very good to work with. As a delegate I find the conferences well balanced and informative. Good value and good for networking.

I have spoken at a number of C5 Reinsurance conferences, most particularly on dispute resolution, touching on the differences between arbitration and mediation. The organisation has been of a high quality and I have always been impressed both by the number and the high grade of the delegates;likewise by the knowledge and standing of the panelists and speakers. This has always been an excellent opportunity to meet others actively engaged in this field, many of whom are decision makers.

The C5 insurance/reinsurance conferences that I have attended have been first rate, with much relevant content, and with interesting attendees. I still refer regularly to one of the handbooks that was distributed at a C5 conference on the Run-off sector. A step ahead of many other conferences.

I think the C5 conferences offer an excellent overview of the topics covered and are also an ideal source of "up to date" information covering topical issues which are commented upon by senior market practitioners and/or market leaders in their respective fields. Attendees are invited to ask questions from the floor and the panel debates can provide a real insight as to how senior market figures see the topic from their own different perspectives and so can be particularly enlightening.

Attending some conferences can be a trial in itself - many are expensive and the content is mundane and predictable BUT! - I attended the insurance conference last June in Amsterdam and was one of the guest speakers. For once the content was relevant; the attendees participated and it was also a great networking opportunity. More of the same please!!

Not without the habitual reticence, I accepted an invitation from C5 to Preside in the Microinsurance Summit they organized last June in Paris. It turned out to be a smallish but AN OUTSTANDING gathering, because there were some truly good exchanges and some substantive exchanges as follow-up. I met quite a number of players unknown to me from the other microinsurance conferences, that unlocked minds and mouths of even some "usual players" to say more telling stories. Good event, well organized.
